Vibration Mode: Less Distracting

It has happened to many of us, an important meeting with the boss or client and our iPhone that is on vibrate interrupts you as it vibrates against the table.  Well, Apple has been working on a solution for the not so quiet vibrations. They recently filed for a patent that would minimize the sound made by the vibration mode of their phones.

Here is more from a CNET affiliate:

” When a mobile phone is set to actuate a silent alert while it is in contact with a hard surface (e.g., on a table or a shelf, or in a drawer), the rotating eccentric weight may cause the mobile phone to vibrate and rattle against the surface,” Apple said in the patent. “In some cases, the noise caused by the rattling exceeds that of audible alerts and may be much more disruptive. Further, the mobile phone may move along the surface when the vibrating device is activated, thus placing the mobile phone at risk of falling.”

The patent also suggests other methods of alerting the user. The phone could flash a light or the screen could turn on.

Of course, Apple and other vendors already provide a notification system to alert you of incoming messages and other items. But Apple seems to be thinking of alternative solutions as well. Continue reading…

HTC and Apple Reached Settlement in Patent Case

Now that Apple has reached a settlement with HTC over their patent lawsuits, will they also settle with other competitors?  Some experts anticipate that the settlement will pave the way for further settlements over patent disputes with their competitors.  The specifics of the settlement between Apple and HTC are not public.

Here is more from a Bloomberg affiliate:

Apple Inc. (AAPL) settled all global lawsuits with HTC Corp. (2498), signaling a new willingness to resolve patent disputes without resorting to the “thermonuclear war” stance favored by co-founder Steve Jobs.

Apple, which had accused HTC of copying features that made its iPhone (AAPL) unique, “will continue to stay laser-focused on product innovation,” Chief Executive Officer Tim Cook said in a statement yesterday with HTC, which surged as the companies announced a 10-year licensing deal. HTC had claimed the maker of iPads and MacBooks infringed wireless patents.

The settlement with HTC, the first company Apple sued for violating iPhone patents, suggests Cook will take a softer line than Jobs, who vowed before his death last year to wage all-out war against smartphones powered by Google Inc. (GOOG)’s Android software. The agreement may also serve as a blueprint for Apple to negotiate patent accords with Samsung (005930) Electronics Co. and Google’s Motorola Mobility business, said Shaw Wu, an analyst at Sterne Agee & Leach Inc. Changes to Patent Laws: Better or Worse?

New patent laws will soon go into effect altering the rules of the patent game.  Patent seekers will need to be the first to file for a patent rather than proving that they were the first to invent.  The new rules have some critics speculating that entrepreneurs will struggle in the race against larger companies.

Here is more from a Forbes affiliate:

“There are a lot of people that think (first-to-file) might favor large businesses, but no one knows how it’s going to affect” the business climate, according to Chas Rampenthal, general counsel at online legal services provider LegalZoom.com.

A solo entrepreneur who follows the rules carefully in acquiring a patent “has a pretty good leg up,” Rampenthal said, noting the law change actually reduces patent fees and possibly quickens the process.

Although companies with more resources can certainly win the race to getting in line, it “doesn’t get them a leg up on doing the inventing themselves.” He said the solo entrepreneur with a great idea remains ahead of the patent game. Continue reading…

EpiCentre exited bankruptcy protection

EpiCentre emerges from bankruptcy protection after its owners put the EpiCentre into Chapter 11 to avoid foreclosure; is now owned by an investor group, Blue Air 2010, the project’s trustee, Elaine Rudisill, is continuing to look into how the EpiCentre spent its money and may seek to recover assets.

The popular complex at College and Trade streets is now owned by an investor group, Blue Air 2010, which bought the project’s troubled loan. The developers who conceived of the mixed-use project, Afshin Ghazi and George Cornelson III, are out of the EpiCentre and no longer have any connections or business with the project.

The project’s movie theater, Mez restaurant and Kazba nightclub will remain open and operating as usual, according to the bankruptcy trustee that has been overseeing the project. The project’s unsecured creditors are set to have their claims paid in full, a big improvement over the 10 cents on the dollar originally proposed.

“All the fighting paid off,” said attorney Dennis O’Dea, who had fought on behalf of the unsecured creditors committee before the committee was disbanded late last year. “I’m so pleased… continue reading

The life is good for Queen Latifah

I accept that I’m, says Latifah; accepted as is and as one is it is a part of Queen Latifah’s, however; to relieve back pain led her to undergo a breast reduction surgery in 2003.

When Queen Latifah enters the room, heads turn. Even when she’s dog-tired. In sweats. Hair slicked under a trucker’s cap.

She has arrived at the Hollywood photo studio not-so-fresh from a red-eye flight from New York, hours after attending the funeral of her friend Heavy D, the rapper.

Still, someone cranks up the jams, and the actress, singer and occasional MC gets down to business: She flashes an infectious smile and transforms herself from Everyday Dana Owens into a perfectly coiffed, platform-heel-strutting diva shaking her booty to Jay-Z as cameras click. Her skinny jeans work every angle.

Still, both incarnations command attention. Her skin glows; she could give J. Lo a run for her money. And while the stilettos heighten the lady’s already tall presence — she’s 5-foot-10 without them — it’s her unassailable comfort in her own skin that radiates a magnetic energy.

“I accept that I’m me,” says Latifah, who co-stars with Dolly Parton in the new movie Joyful Noise, opening next Friday.

Latifah, 41, unwittingly shares what she believes is the secret for her success. “I am me. I don’t have a choice! From the time I really accepted myself, everything got brighter. People were attracted to me for… continue reading
